The Most Important Thing You Can Do to Age Well, According to an Endocrinologist

Does any of this sound familiar?

What should be an enjoyable evening at home with your family is interrupted by those work emails that you really need to get finished before tomorrow morning. And when you get to the office, you’re thinking about all the stuff waiting for you to do at home. You know you should stop at the gym, but when are you going to find the time? You promise yourself you’ll go home and prepare a healthy dinner, but you find yourself swinging through the drive-thru at the nearest fast food joint.

What is your life lacking? Balance. Your life is out of balance.

And when your life is out of balance, it can affect your body and your mind.

Finding balance becomes even more of a priority as we age. We want to age well, we want to age healthfully, we want to live our lives to the fullest. And balance in all the areas of our life can be key to feeling healthy and happy as you go through the aging process.

“The human body behaves the same way like anything in our biosphere – that balance is the best thing that can happen to anything and anybody,” said Dr. Susan Pekarovics, an internist and endocrinologist whose practice is in Los Angeles.

Dr. Pekarovics says she sees this lack of balance a lot in her practice.

“When the patient would like to live longer, healthy and happy, they need to have a balance. Balance in their work, balance in their exercise, diet, private life, professional life – everything.”

Dr. Pekarovics said it can seem like a simple issue, but balance can be very difficult to accomplish. That’s why she discusses with each patient their own individual issues and helps them outline a plan specifically for them.

“We need to really address everything and anything to the patient, and then the patient will be able to accomplish that goal,” she said.

Setting realistic goals is key to the process of finding balance, Dr. Pekarovics said. Unrealistic goals can lead to dissatisfaction and resentment, and most likely to failure.

“Find realistic goals, so you don’t have a constant frustration if you cannot achieve certain things,” she said.

Balance can be an important component of your beauty routine, as well, she said.

“Find the balance of an inner and outer beauty, and be confident in who you are,” Dr. Pekarovics advises. “And I think if you are settled with all of this, then everything else is going to be easier to win over.”

Finding the right balance for you isn’t going to be an easy task. But arm yourself with specific and realistic goals, and soon you’ll be finding more satisfaction in all aspects of your life.
